Working with Youth

Cooking Up Fun is designed for youth ages 9 to 14.
Specific features of the cooking club are intended to support positive youth development.

While general statements are possible, youth ages 9 to 14 vary greatly in abilities, interests, and skills. The challenge to adult facilitators is to listen and observe young people and to assess and support the needs within each group.

The experiential model provides a framework for how adults can facilitate a youth-focused learning process. Applying principles of experiential learning requires shifting from an educator-controlled teaching style to one in which the adult is a facilitator who provides choice and engages youth in defining the learning process.

From a youth development perspective, effective programs and the settings in which they occur support development of personal and social assets that will allow adolescents to become fully functioning adults.
