Teaching Guides

The recipes in Cooking Up Fun are purposefully written to achieve both nutrition and youth development goals. They support teaching messages about:

  1. basic food skills
  2. basic cooking tools and techniques
  3. basic ingredients
  4. choice and creativity in food preparation
  5. healthful food choices
  6. low-cost food choices
  7. foods produced in New York

Cooking Up Fun began with three thematic teaching guides:

  • A Pyramid of Snacks (1998)
  • Muffins & More (1999)
  • Yeast Breads (2000)

Each guide contains a unique collection of youth-tested recipes, supplemental activities, and sample teaching plans. Skill building activities focus on reading recipes and food labels, kitchen and food safety, ingredient science, and nutritional choices.

Recipes and activities to support Cooking Up Fun continue to be developed. New recipe collections focus on entrees featuring whole grains, legumes, and vegetables.
